Wood Engraved
How do you make those burned wood designs?
I think we may have done this in school. You get a piece of wood, like for a plaque, then you somehow burn a design into it. How do you do that?
I'm thinking of adding some type of design onto a tabletop and I thought this might look nice. That or maybe getting some stencils and doing some engraving......can you use an engraving tool on wood (pine)?
Okay, now those are two different things.
Firstly, burning in wood is called pyrography (pyro - fire, graph - writing). You do it with a pyro pen which is basically a piece of wire on a handle, plugged into electricity so it gets hot. Soldering iron works almost just as well. You can buy it in any art/craft shop.
Secondly, wood engraving is done with small knives for woodcut. They come in all different shapes like U, V, flat, curved, pointed... etc. Pine is not the best wood for engraving because it splinters along the lines.
You need a homogeneous, solid but soft wood like pear or linden.
To burn a design into your table, you first need to get any paint or varnish off. I suggest you take it to a carpenter, they have special tools to do that. Else you will loose a week doing it with sandpaper.
Then trace your designs onto the table with copy-paper, but do it LIGHTLY. Then you plug in your pyro pen and go over the lines.
A couple of warnings: make sure the tracing paper is yellow or brown, because you WILL miss the line sometimes, and if it's blue or green it will show in a very ugly way.
Second, the burnt lines of pyrography tend to fade in the direct sunlight. Make sure you etch them as evenly as possible and also quite deep. Then put 2 coats of varnish over it. Try to keep out of direct sunlight and strong light.
Here is an example of one of my works: a coat of arms in a mixed technique, first engraved in wood, patina applied and then shadowing added with pyrography.
