are plastic balls better than stainless steel balls in a tongue piercing?

I have a stainless steel rod in my tongue that got pierced a week ago. i recently switched my balls to plastic ones. will this harm me in any way? and what are the disadvantages and advantages of having a plastic ball over a stainless steel ball. I still have my stainless steel rod in.
i just swallowed my plastic ball... could that be bad to my health
how long does it take to heal?

Acrylic look great but shouldn't be worn for a long duration. They crack and discolor, and loose their treading. Stainless steal will last longer.
