Spur Mounts
Will my tortoise now lay eggs?
I have two spur-thighed tortoises, both now around 30years old. They are garden tortoises not vivarium ones. Male and female. never layed eggs before. I know the male is always mounting the female but never eggs are produced. The other day i caught them at it again and since then the female hasn't been coming out and exploring much. Could this be a sign she will lay eggs or is it just a coincidence?
Keep an eye on the female, she could be looking for a suitable place to lay her eggs.
You will need to be vigilant. Keep an eye out for any disturbed ground where she may have laid.
It might be a good idea to prepare a small patch of ground, near where she is brooding. Dig it over and add some play sand to the soil to make it softer and easier for her to dig a hole to lay in.
Be prepared to transfer the eggs into an incubator.
