Are the rhythms of ritual drum beats based on the human heart and the vibration of the Earth in its movements?
Are spells and Chants built of the same foundations?
I've done quite a bit of drumming for different pagan circles/rituals and hopefully can help you.
Normally when I start drumming (after a few minutes meditating on the site of worship with my drum) I will start off with a very heart-beatish rhythm, which will (within 3-5 seconds) grow more complex, depending on the energies around me.
When I drum for a group who perform circles around an ancient yew tree, I'll draw energy up from the trees routes; I'll be able to feel it coursing through my body, sometimes changing my heart-beat to help pick up the natural rhythm.
(if only the other drummers had a sense of timing! lol)
Spells as far as I'm aware are writen as they are needed and not tied into a rhythm (although I do know some people who prefer everything to have a steady walking pace to it).
Chanting I'm afraid I couldn't tell you anything at all - I hate projecting my voice when practicing!
