Dholak, Deluxe, Cord and Ring $84.99 The dholak is a folk-music drum from Northern India. It is a double-headed, barrel drum that is played horizontally. The right head is higher and the left is lower pitched. It is played by striking with the fingers, knuckles and palms of both hands. Although traditionally rope-tuned, modern versions are also made with turnbuckle tuning. It has been customary to apply a mixture of tar, clay and sand, referred to as ?dholak masala?, to the inside of the left-hand drum-head to lower and adjust its tone. The dholak is one of the most commonly used drums in Indian folk music. (Also Dhulki) |

Shrinivas (mandolin); Shiv Kurmar Shauma (santur); Sivamani (drums, percussion); Bhavani Shankar (dholak, pakhawaj); Roshan Ali, Aziz (dholak); Taufiq Qureshi (def, dafli, percussion); Zakir Hussain (tabla); V. Selvaganesh (kanjira, ghatam, mridangam); A.K. Pallanival (tavil).Recorded live at Rang Bhavan and The Fhanmukhananda Hall, Bombay, India on December 8 & 9, 2000. Includes liner notes by Jacques Denis.SATURDAY NIGHT IN BOMBAY was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.Personnel: Shivkumar Sharma (santur); Taufiq Qureshi (deff, percussion).Recording information: Fhanmukananda Hall, Bombay, India (12/08/2000/12/09/2000); Rang Bhavan, Bombay, India (12/08/2000/12/09/2000).John McLaughlin brought his revived Indo-jazz project Shakti to Bombay (Mumbai) in late 2000, and the result is this live disc, which features only four compositions but runs over an hour in length. (The title is a deliberate play on 1980`s Friday Night in San Francisco.) McLaughlin`s electric guitar and Zakir Hussain`s tabla remain at the core of the group`s sound. U. Shrinivas (on mandolin) and V. Selvaganesh (on kanjira, ghatam, and mridangam, all Indian percussion instruments) remain from the previous album, but there are also a number of Indian guest musicians, giving the music many added dimensions. The most remarkable guests are Debashish Bhattacharya on Hindustani slide guitar, Shankar Mahadevan on vocals, and Shiv Kumar Sharma on santur, an Indian hammered dulcimer. Sharma composed the second track, "Shringar"; nearly half an hour long, it consists almost entirely of a hypnotic dialogue between santur and guitar. Mahadevan`s vocal performance on the opening "Luki" resounds with spiritual power, while Shrinivas`s "Giriraj Sudha" gives a sunny, optimistic lift to the somewhat mournful set. ~ David R.
