What id the difference between a pad mounted, pole mounted, and ground mounted transformer? ?
if you could describe each one simply and why they are used, that would be great too. thanks
A pole mounted transformer is mounted overhead on a distribution pole (duh). Typically, pole-mounted transformers are single phase to minimize weight; if a three-phase bank is required, it can be constructed using three single-phase transformers that individually are easier to handle than an equivalent three-phase unit. Pole-mounted transformers usually have their high voltage bushings exposed and rely on air (and their elevation on the pole) to protect the public from contact with high voltages.
Most other transformers are ground-mounted. That term is not especially descriptive. What you may be thinking about, however, is the broad category of transformers that are neither pole mounted or pad mounted, but that have exposed bushings and therefore must be installed within some kind of enclosure to protect the public. Often, the enclosures are simply gated chain-link fencing.
Pad-mounted transformers are designed to be mounted on concrete pads. Pad mounted transformers are usually three-phase (weight is less of a concern), and they are generally intended for use in applications with the high and low voltage cables enter the transformer from below (such as in underground distribution applications). Pad mounts are almost always contained within grounded metal housings that protect the public from high voltage.
