The Startling Powers of Early Commercial Art
It was no trivial motive that led the painter, Toulouse-Lautrec, into producing posters for Paris entertainers and cabarets. He well understood that inspired come-ons could trigger perceptions not only drawing one to a show or a product, but at the same time evoking the wider excitements of modern life. Those excitements have led to the inception of a collectibles market for not only the posters, largely from the era between 1890 and 1960, but also other promotions like wine catalogues, fashion plates and book and deluxe magazine illustration.
I Desire Vintage Posters has, since 1987, been a major source of this excitement. Our gallery includes a very extensive poster collection covering all the areas of such work, including food and beverages, entertainment, travel, transportation, products and services, publishing, politics and war, sports, fashion, art deco,Surrealism and circus, This material is rich in the major design inventions of modern times, namely, art nouveau, belle epoque, art deco, moderne and Japanese serigraphs. We also have an unsurpassed cache of small format gems of modern graphics, including Gazette du Bon Ton pochoirs, Touring Club Italiano, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Fortune and L'Illustration. Major artists of this genre are included in our collection for example, A.M Cassandre, Pal, Jules-Alexandre Grun, Leonetto Cappiello, Roger Broders, Paul Colin, Jean Carlu, Bernard Villemot, Donald Brun, Peter Ewart, Adolph Treidler,Ludwig Hohlwein, Kasumasa Nagai, Andre Marty, George Barbier, and Georges Lepape.

About the Author
I Desire Vintage Posters opened in Toronto in 1987 by way of the design interests of Valerie and Jim Clark. Soon after the launch of our business we enjoyed an ongoing involvement with the beverage museum established by the Seagram Corporation in the original Seagram property in Waterloo, Ontario. At the time we didn't properly comprehend how unusual a windfall that connection was. By the time the museum closed (in the mid 1990's), dispersing its wonderful artifacts, we were more up to speed with the challenges of marketing such potent constructs. Also, we had begun the enjoyable work of tracking comprehensively the special instances of vintage promotional graphics still extant. In the course of that pleasant reconnoitre we have come to know many very gracious, knowledgeable and amusing people in the vintage graphics business, first in the US and then in Europe. Due to our location and the international nature of the vintage poster market, we have concentrated upon making our findings available by way of a website. Although such an outreach contends with problems of remoteness, we have experienced gratifying surprise in the warmth and attentiveness of many collectors on every continent.
In 1996, we became Charter Members of the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association.
