Ringing on my Floor Tom?

hello yahoo looking for all you drummers out there.
Ever since I bought my Drum Set my floor tom has rung so horribly, replaced heads and tried all i can in my knowledge to make it stop. I currently use Coated emperors over clear ambassadors. Help. (The set is the Mapex qr series jazz set)
To clarify I've tuned the drum trying to make it tighter seeing if that helps. I'm still a generally new drummer

Keli is wrong,,It is probably not the drum.. (although I suppose it could be but generally not the case) A, you are tuning the wrong way to get rid of ring. The ring comes from the vibration back and forth of the air between the two drum heads. Think of it like a rubber band strung between 2 fingers..The tighter you pull the band the higher it's pitch and the longer it rings..Conversely...The looser the rubber band the lower the pitch, the shorter the ring. try loosening both heads (top and bottom) and try 3 different combinations..1.Both heads same pitch 2. top head a little higher then bottom head...3.vice versa. Another trick is to get a pitch and then take one lug an loosen it as much as possible.. Coated emperors are usually used by Jazz players who Love ring in a drum... Get some of those evanshydraulicc heads for a super dry sound..Again..It's 99%probablyy not the drum
