What are different sized or weighted drumsticks for?

I don't know much about drums and im not sure what drumsticks to buy... What do all the numbers and letters mean? For example 5A... Whsts that mean?

Go to the music store and pick up a 7A, 7B, 5A and 5B. One of these 4 sticks is what you want to start with. You don't want a really heavy stick for the Drum Set. Just feel of each stick and see which you like best from a comfort standpoint. Your preference may change over time just like some guitarist may start with 9's and go to 10's or 11's later. But, you do want to start with one of these sizes or something very close to that, no 2B's or anything that big.
