How much do drum shells affect the drumsets sound?
Is it the drum heads or drum shells that affect the sound the most?
Both are important to the sound of the drum. You have to tune the heads to get the sound you are looking for, but the shells themselves will play a large part in how the drums actually sound. A heavy shell produces a very different sound than a lighter shell, and shells that are old or a little warped cannot be properly tuned. As for heavy or lighter shells, that is strictly a matter of preference, depending on what type of sound you really want.
