The new digital electric meters are idiot meters: easy to read, but don't show that you're strip heater is on?
The city of Austin recently installed high tech meters that can transmit your electric use directly to the billing station. But these meters give less service than the old meters. With the old meters I could just look
at the spinning disc and instantly tell if someone was running a strip heater or high wattage appliance in the house. Does anyone know if
there is a way to make the new meters show the SPEED of the watts
being used.
On the face of the meter there is a small string of led squares. When one square lights up one watt of power is consumed. When the led square goes out another watt is consumed. This operation will repeat as power consumption is registered. The old meter used 7.4 watts every time the disk went around. The new meter has a caterpillar effect. When the caterpillar lights up from left to right and then back to the left again 7.4 watts have been consumed. As mentioned above each square once on represents a watt, And once off represents a watt. Good luck
