What would be cheaper; buy a cheap new Drum Set or re-head an old set?
I'm wanting to buy a drum set but I'm not wanting to pay that much. A friend has an old set he is wanting to get rid of but needs new heads. Would it be better to just buy a new one or buy good heads for the old drum set? If you could tell me a little about cymbals too, it would be great.
Also if you could give like an average of how much it would be to re-head the whole set (bass drum, toms, snare)
i will you answer you main question first: getting a used set and putting new skins on is the cheapest way to go. is it the best? thats up to you. but used is definitely cheaper. a set of heads will differ depending on what youre looking for. if its a cheap crap set, i would suggest evans hydraulics. they are known for making cheap drums sound better. these would be for toms only, at about 15-25$ a piece, depending on size. you could also go with remo pinstripes, which is one of the most popular drum heads, and a bit cheaper than the hydraulics at 10-20$ a piece. snare head is easy, 10$ max. bass Drum Head, this one could be tricky. you could go with a cheap option (15$) and stick a blanket in the drum for tone, or you could spend a lot (50$) on a really nice head that wont need additional muffling. so putting all new heads on would cost maybe around 80 bucks. but you dont necessarily have to put new ones on everything.
im not sure what you wanna know about cymbals.... theres a lot to know about them. you should be more specific lol. but go to www.midwestpercussion.com they usually have great deals and sell cymbals in package deals for cheaper if youre looking for a whole set. almost always free shipping too. my personal fav brand is paiste. i think they also tend to have the best sounding starter cymbals. sabian and zildjian are also very good companies.
