Case Set
Is it bad to leave a flute set-up and out of the case?
I have a safe place to put it, and its set-up, so if I want to play it, I just pick it up. The only time its in its case is when I bring it to school. Is this bad for the flute?
I am a professional flutist. My flute (worth about 8 grand) sits out all day, on a heavy weighted peg. The intensity of my practice is such that I work - take a break (and this computer is in the same room - that explains the little dips into YA, among other things) and then go back. The flute goes back into the case when I am done for the day, or have to leave for a rehearsal or gig, obviously. There are sleeves you can buy that have anti-tarnish cloth in them. or you can use a horizontal cradle with a drape of the same cloth ( sometimes called Pacific cloth - the same stuff that is in the silver drawer of your sideboard). Since my flute sites out, I seldom swab it - it just dries. I would not leave it out in fluctuating climate conditions, nor for days and days - but throughout the day - sure.
