Why do you think "To Build a Fire" by Jack London should be an American Classic?

Personally, I believe it is because it teaches a moral story that we can picture in our heads. The moral is to not have too much ego or else you will greatly regret it. Why do you guys think it should be an American classic?

That's my favourite of his short stories. I think it really demonstrates the fragility of the human race. We are supposedly 'above' other species because of our ability to build and create (fire has always been an example of that) but in this story the man is totally dependant on the fire and it goes out, the wolf-dog survives the harsh terrain but without his fire the man is too fragile.
